I think it is trying to communicate with my bridge (my   tv 4th gen 4k which is downstairs) and do everything through that which meant it wasn't responding properly and the brightness adjustments weren't working. This might be a runaround solution but I deleted the nanoleaf module from synapse, turned off my Canvas, restarted my PC, downloaded the Canvas module again and as the module began "searching" mode it had already found my Canvas before I could enter "pairing" mode.
